Male / 23 years old / Taurus / USALAHjik's Statement
Lahjik aka Lah the 23 year old Brooklyn Native, hails from the City of Providence Rhode Island. At only 8 years old Lah along with his mother and two sisters circumstantially fled New York. After witnessing the attempted murder of his mother’s fiancé and dealing with the aftermath that followed, 8 year old Lah resorted to music using it as an emotional outlet. He utilized his mother’s cd collection to polish his guitar skills studying compositions of Richie Havens, Jimmi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and the legendary Bob Marley playing it back by ear. "Singers like Anita Baker, Sade, Tracey Chapman and Aaron Neville were who I grew up listening to in my mother’s house hold” Lah recalls, reflecting on his first encounters with music as a child. Lah received the Fugees’ “Fugee La” album and the late Tupac Shakur’s “2 Pacalypse Now” album on his 12th birthday. This was when Lah discovered his passion for the art of poetry and rhythm. To this day Lauren Hill and the late Tupac Shakur RIP remain two of Lah’s greatest influences in music. Having such a unique approach to creating music and song writing, Lah has been able to connect with audiences of all walks of life. People often compare Lah’s introspective style of rap to the likes of Common, Black Thought of “The Roots” and Q-tip of “A Tribe Called Quest”. Those most familiar with Lahjik’s music catalogue will tell you that the young rapper displays an insight and an understanding of the world beyond his 23 years, calling him an “Old Soul”. Lah is a product of a strong cultural upbringing, his mother being a college professor who has traveled the world teaching African American Cultural Arts with stories of times spent with the likes of Assata Shakur, a former leader of the Black Panther Party and the aunt of the late great Tupac Shakur. It’s clear as day that a good apple won’t fall far from its family tree. In 2004 Lah returned to New York City fresh out of high school, attending The Institute of Audio Engineering where he received his Certification in Audio Engineering. He later enrolled in the University of New Haven, a school about an hour outside of New York lasting only one semester returning to New York shortly after.
Lahjik's additional interest in the world of fashion has placed him in the company of the fashion industries youngest and most reputable aspiring stylists, designers and entrepreneurs. Lah will often reference clothing lines “Dirty Jeenius” and “Rebel Socialite” both brands being big supporters of his music. Lah has made mention of his friendship with celebrity photographer Johnny Nunez who has been a positive role model for both Lah and long time friend and Producer Kevin Frazier aka Kliche.
“In the midst of a power struggle in the hip hop industry between business and artistry there has to be a balance between rhyme and reason” Says Lahjik. He believes he is more than just a rapper/musician. His name is a statement clarifying much of the confusion in pop culture today…”Can there be a balance?” ‘The Voice of Lahjik’ has the answer!
