CINCINNATI, OHIO
I am a people watcher and I thrive from observation. When I watch, I wonder what that certain individual may be going through, or what story may develop of that person. I aim to capture people in their environment, with special emphasis on the human figure. Some of the references are based on candid photographs. Just as in photography, I want to capture a moment from the outside looking in. “Current Events” is based on broadcasting the present just as the news does, but highlight events and individuals that normally would not be in the limelight. These compositions provoke thought and questions from the viewer, which lead to the various narrative interpretations. The piece may speak on a number of levels, but the stories are universal. Engaging an afternoon conversation, taking time to oneself to think, and not having the best experience at a restaurant are a few themes that are explored. The viewer explores rhythms and relationships amongst the figure and the environment, not only within the paintings but also from their physical reaction to the painting.
This series of work seeks to engage sensory experience visually, physically, and possibly verbally, through capturing “Current Events.” The compositions use newspaper collage, the source of current events, which blend subtlety into the paintings in areas and stand boldly in others. The purpose of newspaper is to broadcast current events around the world daily. I seek to do the same and broadcast events that may occur in my daily life, things that may happen around me. The figure becomes incorporated into the composition, exemplifying human interaction and how the figure becomes part of its environment. My work fits into contemporary art thought because it broadcasts the present. My work shows that people take everyday occurrences for granted. and that we should embrace the everyday.
