If you were never paid for your artwork, but respected by all of your peers, and adored by thousands, even millions, would it matter to you?

it depends on if you rely on it as your profession, or if it's a hobby etc. these days, you can't support yourself, have a roof over your head and be able to eat via the support of others.

but otherwise, no, it wouldn't matter. art is an expression, if you get paid for your work, wonderful! if not, it makes most people feel better expressing their feelings and making other people feel good/bad/different etc. what more could you want than affecting other peoples' lives this way?

just an idea... because let me guess, the year 2020 or 2222 or something is going to bring another massive disaster just because the numbers show a pattern, rite?

Hmm, It is ok not to be paid for your artwork because the fame & respect can bring opportunities to make money and provide for yourself. Assuming you are smart enough to use your status instead of working at Mcdeez.

But then again you would have to define what is art or what do you consider that you are doing as art and not. An example would be a painter who paints for free but who is also a dancer and gets paid to dance. He's not being paid for his art, but because he classifies dancing as dancing and not art. I think only working a McJob and giving away your artwork (music,painting,photos...etc) for free would be considered as not being paid for art (unless you have a special way of making burgers!).

But then, as I said before, if you have the fame and respect that won't happen. Being paid for your work is the reword for your efforts. The more you work = the more you'll have.

But, there is another class of "getting paid". I haven't been able to find people to work on projects with because they would all ask for payment, even doh the project had nothing to do with gaining money.
I guess a balance must exist, just like in all other things.

Even doh this is off topic.

The Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012. They have a calendar that predicts our civilization's end in 2012. The scariest thing is that they also had a calendar that predicted their civilization's end and it became true when the "white man" arrived.

It's not really doomsday, there are other things that say life will go on after 2012, just very differently. Not necessarily fireballs or exploding planet. Just something to throw us off track and maybe kill a big part of us. It is purely on how it is interpreted.

You can watch some documentaries about it on youtube.
I know I'll be with my girlfriend on that day (December 21).

2012 won't be the end but the beginning of the end, thats my view on it anyway

to answer the question, I dont honestly know how to answer.
the opinions and praise of others don't mean anything to me now because from my vantage point, I under perform...no scratch that, I suck.
I am no "artist" merely a being in a human body going through a human experience trying to mimick God, the supreme being, the almighty creators work.

And I am failing miserably

Wow at TheDigITech. Man, such lack of confidence, not cool for the chicks man, not cool.

Apparently you have the wrong definition of artist. Seriously, I don't consider myself an "artist" either. Art is what you make of it, it is culture and definition. A people without art is a people without culture.

Now dude, "sucking" is very very very relative. You could say Picasso sucked, hell yes you could...but why doesn't he ?
A lot of people thought he did.
Look, it was never about the art itself. It's about the energy, the story and what it emits.
You could say abstract art sucks, but that would literally make you an idiot. Why? because abstract art is the cultivation of feelings and things that cannot be well explained with a image with sense. You don't "look" at abstract art, you "feel" it.

And if your bummed about how you perform, well it happened to all of us. Now I think the problem is in what you believe..."mimick God". You'll probably keep being bummed until you realize you are a universe.

Lack of Confidence? Maybe so.
Dont think I dont believe in myself because I do. Even when Im around people that have caredless about my craft and didnt give a damn until I started winning awards and honors for my work.
Sounds odd right?
How could a kid that has so much talent and has won a few awards be so harsh on himself?
I expect much because I know I can do it.
Fuck a picasso or da vinci, why are they held so high and mighty?
Why cant there be another great thinking mind?
I can be greater than them, I can be greater than myself
But I haven't lived up to my expectations.
Feels like everthing is so wrong for this situation.
but if im here it has to right, right?
in simple short words:
Im just really disappointed in myself thats all.

"mimicking God" means mimicking the act of creation.
I know I am one witht eh universe
Im made of the same materials

TheDigITech, that's cool but for example I never got any awards. Besides of the award of Failing art class in school, haha. Maybe you should teach me a thing or two.

But man it's not about that, it's just about making s*%t. Nobody can really grade a piece of someones mind. And why Picasso and others are so High and mighty ? Technique, originality, effort...etc. And you're wrong, there's plenty of Picasso's out there right this instant. Take for example one of my favorites Banksy.

About 2012

In 2012 December 21 the sun will be perfectly aligned to the center of the galaxy, the black hole who holds the milkyway together. Also, another special event occurs, the earth completes a wobble. The earth is slightly inclined at an angle and wobbles, what are the effects of this we do not know, this phenomenon occurs only each 25,000 years. That is what the Mayan predictions are based on. Before you people go all skeptical and shit, your talking about most badass astronomers known to man kind, and before you talk shit and dismiss this as some stupid theory, don't look stupid... and look into it first. I assure you that the shit is real, not only some dumb prophecy but scientifically speaking. Whats the outcome we don't really know, what we do know is that a major change will take place. Now please stop being so ignorant.

First of all I'd like to say sorry for being so hard on you guys about it, but you gotta realize...this time the shit might not miss that fan!

Second of all...NerdNina.. I got a counter punch@! ...don't I always o_^

Ignorance is the reason to most of humanity's problems, the source of racism, famine,starvation,war...etc.
And now, possibly the end of our existence, it's not like we didn't know about this phenomenon...they discovered this more than 2000 years ago. Someone once said that being ignorant and living "life to the max day by day, the moment" is a sign of immaturity, meaning being afraid of consequence and responsibility. And, NerdNina this is not a personal attack, I like you. lol XD

Truth is that NerdNina is right. But... it really depends on how you look at and what it means to live your life every moment to the fullest. For me it means being with the people I love, doing the things I love, try my best at life... but not being ignorant to the consequences of my actions. When I say I want to try everything in life before I die, it doesn't include things that are degrading, hurtful...etc.

Now I don't know you NerdNina, so I can't judge... but I'm sure you have a lot to say.

You are right, just create shit.
That is a view point I'm striving to regain
I want to explore Jim Crow, I may start with that and attempt to pick up a pencil again.

Banksy is quite a fascinating artist. very creative. Hes great in his own right.
(I look up to picasso primary for his cubist movement. the closest thing to it within the last ten years was the start of flame surfacing in 1999)

as far as living each day like its my last, i dont fully agree with it
I live to make tomorrow better.
IMO 2012 I think is much more than a dooms day date because 2012 has been floating around for a while. im sure scientist have know of the date since they found and solved the mayan calander and the way i see it, the ancients knew more about how this earth and universe works than we will ever know

don't have as much to say as you =p

don't get me wrong i'm always watching documentaries on so many things including stuff like that, i just don't let it get to me or let myself 'oh my god we're all gona die when that happens lets all get to a bomb shelter' etc. whatever happens, let it happen, but don't it fuck with you now.

1. it may be inevitable
2. you may spend your whole life stressing about the world coming to an end because you saw something about it on the news, and nothing ends up happening
3. who bloody cares!

just do what u do and do it the best you can =D

don't worry, i don't take that kinda stuff to heart ;) i just don't normally explain myself much, you tend to elaborate alot more than me haha

awesome work by the way, i think i spent like half an hour going through it.

I agree.

I had ran dry of "talent" at some point, that was until I found purpose. I discovered the thing that gave meaning to what I'm doing, "the Funk".
More on that http://artst.com/forum/topic/index/id/299

Thing is you need a goal to reach, a meaning to what you do.
Art that doesn't speak, in my opinion, is empty.

NerdNina made me blush ! ^_^ Thanks!
And I do agree, we can't live in fear, but in ignorance either. We must face the facts straight forward. If I die in 2012 I'd like to keep living normally, with a smile on my face :)
I don't think this is the end anyway. "No energy is lost, everything is transformed".
